Proof - Deer don't hear as good as we think from Dr. Risenhoover at Texas Universty
Dr. Kenneth Risenhoover at Texas A&M University, who used some sophisticated
technologies to generate audiograms for 5 adult deer, recently substantiated this research.
His results were very similar to those from the Georgia study:
“Evoked potentials (responses) were detected and recorded at intensity levels of up to 85
dB in a frequency range of 0.5 to 12 Khz. Evoked potentials from the 5 deer tested
indicated that the range of greatest hearing sensitivity was between 1 and 8 Khz, with a
marked peak centered at 4 Khz.”
This research all seems to indicate that a deer’s hearing is really not that more acute than
ours. They are not like the $6 Million-Dollar Man (or was it the Bionic Woman?) who
could hear the bad guys whispering at a quarter-mile. Instead, a deer knows you’re in the
woods simply because you are making some noises that aren’t supposed to be there!

Hmmmm, not so sure about all of that. Deer may only here a tad better than us, but, they can pin point, to the exact tree, where the noise is coming from. Since they can move there ears in all directions, it gives them that ability. They may only be able to see mostly in black and white, but its very good eye site...

They didn't say they couldn't figure out WHERE the sounds came from. They said that deer hear along the same wavelengths as us and their hearing isnt as acute as some thought.
the deer can hear the 1st initial sound, but wont know where it came from... unless they hear it again.... then they know within 4" where it came from and look and with their immaculate sight find whats outta place.
once those ears are fixed though, hard to beat them because they have 2 ears pointin the same direction almost, like a triangular sonar, and that beats our 50/50

Similarly, if a deer is looking directly at you, don’t be too concerned if its ears are
moving in different directions. However, if it has both ears cupped toward you – you’ve
been spotted and he’s trying to get all of the information he can. By comparing the
signals that each ear receives the deer can accurately locate the source of a sound.

Not sure if any of the things above are going to change the way anyone hunts. You still have to be quiet and do all the right things.
Your right there. Everyone will still hunt the way that gets them deer..... Interesting information though.
So what sounds are in those DB's and KHZ's they here?? I know they measure sound that way, but we don't have a way to measure sound, so how loud is "85
dB in a frequency range of 0.5 to 12 Khz"? Thats all greek to me.... lol...
