**** posted this on the target forum, but I figure I'd post it here too in hopes of getting some actual replies. sorry admins...
I am planning on hitting my first 3d course this weekend but I just had a couple questions.
First off, what are the typical ranges for targets? Right now, I'm pretty comfortable at 20 yards (which is all I plan to shoot when I actually go hunting), but beyond that, I get a little sketchy.
Second, the targets don't seem to have backstops obviously, so what happens if I miss? Do I just go fishing for my arrow after?
So yeah, basically, I just kinda want to get an idea of what to expect before I take the hour drive and such.

Thanks.
wheel shots are between 15 yards to 45 yards typcially. No one says you have to shoot exactly at the stakes if your not keeping score. No range finders generally.
You got it, you miss, you fish. Loose lots of arrows on a 3d range. Also not great idea to tie up the entire course for long periods looking for your arrow. Its its not crowded, by all means. Or let a group pass thru, and you can continue.
I don't shoot past 25 yards with my longbow no matter where the stakes are.
Bigcountry is pretty much right on. ASA shoots for hunter class, if that's what you are shooting, will not go beyond 42 yards, but can be as close as a few feet. Depending who set the course, you could have a ton of close ones, or a ton of long ones, so hard to say what you are going to get. My experience is that the majority are between 24-35 yards, but that is the course I usually shoot, and the setter is a distance man. If they have a "novice" class, that may be a good option for you, because that is know yardage, and 35 yard max (if I remember right.) Just keep one foot touching the stake you are shooting from, and you're good.
Lost arrows are a fact of life on the 3D course, if I don't find mine in a couple mins, I move on. Etiquette similar to golf.

I love shooting 3d. There are usually 3 different stakes you can shoot from. A kid stake a hunter stake and a pro stake. Pro stakes are usually long long shots. I stick to the hunters the longest I've shot on those are about 40 you have to accept the fact you may miss. Its a part of it, you also may hit a Hard spot or something and break an arrow. It happens. Just gotta get ready for anything because it can happen and it will.

Thanks guys for all the helpful replies -- it definitely gives me a much better idea of what I'm gonna be walking into. I figured it was like golf, except with a bow -- which makes it awesome!!!
If I can shoot at around 20 yards I would be more than happy. I'm not really trying to compete or anything, I'm just there to have fun -- which to me is what Archery and Bowhunting is all about (event if I never bag a deer my first year).
Thats what I said my first time too, I said ohh im not gonna compete or try real hard or anything like that and just put kill shots on them and I shot my highest score ever 295. Ohh well if my aunt had nuts she'd be my uncle. Ryan.
