Hey guys here in Indiana ive heard there gonna shortin the gun season and muzzleloader to only nine days a piece and add two additional bonus antlerless seasons is this true whats goin on here ? ANY INPUT WOULD BE GREAT THANKS
That IS the proposal beginning next year. I personally think it is a great idea. Our gun seasons have been way too long. 32 days is way to much pressure on the bucks in farm country. There is absolutely no reason, other than our long firearms season, that Indiana cannot produce the same class of trophy animals that our neigbors, Illinois and Ohio, produce year after year. The antlerless only seasons are being added in order to reduce the doe population, another step in producing more trophy bucks. About the only other change I would have like to have seen was extending the bow season thru the end of January. This, of course, is just my opinion. You can log onto the DNR website to see all the proposed changes and there's also a place to leave feedback.

I am all for the shortening gun season. But the propsed doe only firearm season during the second weekend of october is a bad idea imo. I think you will have an issue with guys shooting bucks with firearms and saying it was with there bows. Here is the link were you can leave comments on the proposed changes, http://www.in.gov/nrc/2377.htm I did and said that if the goal was to contain the deer heard than a huge help would be making bonus antlerless tags cheaper. Let them know your thoughts. This and hand written letter is the only way you public opinion will be heard.
I agree with you Shoottothrill about lowering the price of bonus tags. I have seen proposals that would sell a license bundle, archery-firearms-ml and extra bonus tag for $72.00, talked about this summer, but so far I haven't seen anything concrete about it. If you will notice, that second weekend in October firearms season is only in counties with a "4" or greater designation. The proposals as written, are not perfect but I think they are a good start to improving the quality of our bucks. These proposals, like the one buck rule, will be revisited after five years.

Yea I remeber they sent out a survey about the bundle tags. I think that would be a step in the right direction. Because bonus antlerless tags costing the same as your regular tag is a tad bit crazy . I know were lucky to be able to get extra tags so I dont complain too much.
My license coast me $88 last year. Thats a sportsman. big game, doe tag, fishing, small game, plus turkey tag, and bow. And thats not even a guarantee I would get a doe tag. Might get one, two at the most...... unless someone signs over a doe tag to you, that all you get here.

Right on Jim. Indiana has already come a looong way since OBR. Shorten the gun seasons, and Look Out! It could be one of the top destinations.
I hope i don't step on someones toes but i wish they would get rid of gun season all together but keep muzzleloader season that why some of these hunter that take 2-3-4 shot at a deer won't be out there . It would only give them 1 shot so they would have to make it count .Don't get me wrong I'm a gun hunter to,. i just think it would help our bucks to get bigger. Plus i would sure like to know where dnr is coming up with Indiana is over crowed with deer cause it sure isn't where i hunt i can tell you that .It must be up north . I use to be able to drive out to where i hunt and see doe's and buck out in the bean fields that doesn't happen much anymore . This just my opion ok . I hunt in southwest indiana .
they are still pretty thick on the the west central side. A lot of that has to do with farmers not letting people hunt. To them the crop damage is less of a hassle than dealing with people. I would be totally fine with getting rid of the first firearm season. I got into this sport gun hunting tho, and I would be amazed if the dnr would make that change bc of all the tags they sell. Have you ever been to a gander mountain the night before gun season? that place is nuts, gun seasons are just good for the economy and produce the most kills so i am sure its here to stay...which is completely fine with me too!! ; )
I think you guys are all nuts. Last I checked you could shoot over 300 deer in your state. Your also nuts because your letting government create a "destination", your just telling them your a bunch of addicts and will pay anything for a fix. These people are going to stick it too you but first they'll stick it to the N.A."s of which most will (residents hunters) be in favor and you'll just be next in line.
The state should do no more than manage numbers. Plenty of people who still kill does and you don't have half as many deer in your state as you should so killing does now is just shooting yourselves in the foot. Look at your harvest numbers, pitiful for a state your size. Start killing 300,000 and then worry about to many deer.
Here's one report of your states harvest result but I'll predict your harvest numbers will drop as you start killing more and more does, that aint good since your still so small. 64% of the bucks taken were 2.5 an older. What more do you want? Why your state wants to act like some mega deer hunting destination and some of your hunters believe it is already is nuts when you look at the harvest numbers and the amount of deer a guy can kill in your state every year. I do find that attitude in other area's with in the state and it stinks. Your land prices are way out of line as well as most everything else.
