Default Elk Hunting Public Land in Colorado

Me and some friends are planning an elk hunt for this September. The plan now is to buy an OTC tag in one of the units, but were not sure on where to head yet. We have looked at some different units including 45, 62, 14, and some areas around Glenwood Springs (33, 23, 24).

Any suggestions from you guys on these spots, or others that you have experience with. The main thing, is going to be just trying to get away from the crowd, but this is also all of our first trip out to Colorado, and first time camping up on a mountain for a week.

Never hunted elk or been to CO (except for a layover).

I can tell you, though.....45 might be a bit crowded.....lol. I KNOW (and I'm sure we're only a drop in the bucket) of at LEAST 15 that'll be hunting there the 18-26th. I'll be one of them.

Good luck to you. I've got 2 buddies with similar questions. I'll forward this to them as it gains legs.

I hunted out of Meeker in the flat tops for 10 years, and personally killed 7 elk over those years. But be prepared to put in some serious hard work to get to the elk, and to get away from the crowds

Best of Luck,
JEff
