Default Not Really a Bowhunting question....

I'm hunting this year with a knife with a gut hook on it for the first time and was wondering how to resharpen the hook. It looks like a rattail file would fit in it but I thought that if any of you had done it you could tell me if that works.

Ive never had much use for a gut hook, but I did sharpen one for a buddy one time. Not sure if this is the right proceedure, but worked well enough. I hit the hook with a fine, rat taill file, then buffed it up with a rod steal (those long steals that come in knife sets), and then a croak(sp) stick.

Yeah, hunting with a knife sounds insane, although my uncle did kill a bear with his knife when it charged him.

You shouldn't need to sharpen a gut hook. Unless you gut out like 20 animals a year.
