Couldn't find my deer today...

Well guys I shot my first deer today with my bow. It was a really nice buck. He came in at about 20 yards slightly quartering towards me. As I released on him he took a step forward and I hit him a little ways back. It looked like a liver shot to me from the hit and when I found some blood. I had a complete pass through, however the arrow did not smell or anything.

I started tracking him after about 30 minutes. Didn't find any good blood for the first like 50 yards, then I found some nice pools of blood. I ended up slowly tracking him until an hour after dark when I lost the trail. I am planning on going out in the morning to look some more, but he went into some really really thick cover so we will see if I can find him. I shot him with a Slick Trick magnum 100 gr. out of a '08 Bowtech Guardian 62 lbs. 10 minutes after I sat in the treestand. Any help would be great guys.

That sucks big time, I know it happened to me last week. The biggest buck I've ever shot in my life and lost the blood trail. I hit him a little high at forty five yards, he went down like someone hit him between the eyes with a baseball bat. He got up after five minutes and I never saw him again.

Good luck on finding him tomorrow.

Best advice I can offer, is to read the recovery thread sticky at the top of the page.

Then get out there in the morning and do all you can, for as long as you can.

Your first mistake was taking up a blood trail after ten minutes on a deer you thought you liver shot. Read the sticky about tracking.

In his defense...

He said 30 minutes and thats more than enough time for a liver shot.

I started tracking him after 30 minutes, and before I started tracking him into the thicket it was well over an hour after I had shot him.

Should of waited longer than 30 minutes to look for him but hopefully you can still find him in the morning. With a questionable shot you should of waited till the morning to look. Just make sure you look as much as you can and do a grid search over the whole area. good luck

Ya I know, but the problem is I live over 40 minutes away from where I can hunt, and I have class in the morning, so I needed to at least try and find him. I however did not push him when I was tracking him.

I hear ya joe.. I have to do the same thing. Sometimes you gotta do what ya gotta do. Good luck finding him. Go back in the morning if you can and go over the trail again. If he went into a thicket, hes in it somewhere.

if it comes down to missing class to find the buck then thats what needs to be done.
