Default Buck Estrous?

No, bucks don't come into estrous like a doe, but do they feel "it" before the does come into it?

Reason I ask, a large racked buck, 8 to 10 point here in PA this weekend, wasn't dogging does, but running his nose up their "special" places in an overgrown hayfield this weekend, watched him for an hour, go to every doe (6) in the field and do this, then gave the horns to one, causing her to take the ladies somewhere where mr. aggressive was not present. No calling, grunts or can calls, could convince him to close the distance 50 yards to me with the bow.

What do you guys think? He wasn't "dogging" them, wasn't running, checking scent on the ground, just feeding, sniffing, then moving onto the next one...kinda like a frat boy on $2 pitchers of PBR on a saturday night

I think bucks definitely can "sense" the breeding season is coming-but then again all they have to do is smell one doe and that triggers the behavior you are describing. On the elk/deer farm i work at, every year theres one or two old cows that go into heat weeks before the rest of the herd does. Once those bulls smell those 1-2 cows, its on!! Every cow in that field will be gettin scent checked just as you are describing.

The bucks testosterone levels are climbing and they are anxious just biding their time!
