I use a climber...but the safety harness is a pain in my A$$...ideas?
I use a Summit Viper SS which really has nothing to do with my help question. But as I am climbing the tree it takes FOREVER to go up and to loosening the safety harness...tightening it...climb...so on and so fourth...so here is my question.
Is there a product or a different way to go up a tree faster without tightening the typical safety belt every few feet?
I don’t mind once I get to the top taking the time to fixate the strap...its just the climbing part I hate. I find myself only going up 15 feet or so now a days because it takes soooo long. I know I know…just go out earlier but most of the time I leave work at 5:30pm or so and I rush to the woods.
are you goin up in ur stand drunk or stoned? i have had a few stands in my day..and i never climbed up and thought holy chit i almost died...maybe you need to spend some time workin on your stand to make it better..also i had a rope i tied everything to to pull up when i got to the top as to not have ta carry anything up with me...granite this was b4 the safety strap came along or was a big deal anywaz...
on another note...does your harness have a release so you can get down if ya do fall, and would ya have lived if ya hit the ground....more and more people are dying because their safety harness caught them and then they hang there and get blood poisoning and are unable to get down!!!!! the story i saw said 80% woulda lived had they hit the ground and the other 20% were questionable.

I will probably catch hell for this but here's what I do. Instead of tying the top and bottom of my stand together with the thin cord I tie em together with a piece of 13mm climbing rope that has a prussic on it. I then attach my safety strap to the prussic. I carry another piece of climbing rope and another prussic in my fanny pack and when I get to the height I want to hunt I secure this second rope and prussic around the tree and transfer my safety strap connection from my stand connected rope to the tree connection. I personally don't use carabiner's I make all of my connections with a piece of nylon webbing. I can't stand the clanging and banging of the carabiner's.That's my system with my climber. I have ascent/descent ropes on all of my hang-ons. I've been using climbers , well, since they have been made and in all honesty I didn't use a safety harness in one until about 3 yrs. ago. I also realize that my system isn't the best and sliding the rope up the tree is absolutely the safest method but I climb pines almost exclusively and I just can't stand getting covered with pine sap. What a PIA. I also realize that "Stand Failure" is why folks fall from most climbers. I'm just playing the odds that both sections of my climber won't fail at the same time. I have a feeling there's a "ton" of folks out there that use a harness when climbing but I bet most climb and then attach. I feel that I will be attached to at least one section of my climber and I will take my chances of what happens from that pt. I know I don't want to hit the ground. Work's for me.
I know I will get chastised for this, but I do not use the climbing harness on the way up. I know it is bad practice, but in the trees that I climb (hickory, walnut) provide good grip for the climbing stand, and my climbing stand has a bar to provde extra security.
The first thing I do when I get up is attached my safety harness, and I wear it on the way down.
I use the line to go up the tree. It takes longer than not being safe but I have more to live for than me...............................
If it is a tree that I use a lot I have a climbing rope already tied to the top and bottom of the tree. There is a crusets(spelling) knot tied to the rope. If you fall you can get down!
Very easy.
