Default Wyoming Antelope/Elk Hunt 2009

After seeing the post about Antelope hunting by Gillette, WY I decided to post my Elk and Antelope success from the same area. I hunted very close to Gillette for the Antelope and about an hour south for the Elk.

The Antelope hunt took place back on opening weekend. I was hunting with two friends from Texas. Got my antelope the second morning spot and stalk at 63 yards and watched a friend get an 82" buck at 58 yards after an awesome stalk.

The Elk hunt started on September 4th. I arrived the night before and shot in the headlights to check my bow. We woke up at 4:30 the next morning to start our long drive up a two track to the back of the ranch we were hunting on. After glassing and calling at several spots we made it to the top of a timbered draw about 10:30 in the morning. We called and heard a bugle some 1000 yards away. We began glassing and then I spotted him. The 6x7 bull was feeding in a small grassy opening. We watched him go into a small group of trees and not come out for a while. after concluding he must have laid down in the hot weather (close to 90). we decided to move in. leaving one video camera and a friend to cow call, my dad, another camera, and I snuck in to about 100 yards of the bedded bull. They began cow calling and even though the heat of the day was on its way he got fired up and began to come our direction, tearing up trees and bugling the whole way. I saw his horns coming over a ridge, ranged some trees he was walking by and drew back. the bull let out a bugle and paused at 45 yards and I let her fly. The arrow passed through his lungs and the bull had no idea what happened. He spun a 180 and began swaying his head. I drew back and at 50 yards the second arrow hit home as well, the bull took off, went about 100 yards and tipped over. My Biggest elk to date, I was with my dad when i got him, and I had two angles of the video. Awesome!
