how to properly install those cat whisker string silencers

I was wondering if anyone knew how to properly install those cat whisker string silencers? Mine do not look right I just tied them around the string and then took them all apart please help.

Separate the string and put them thru it. Some then tie them in a knot but I don't. Then stretch one end at a time and cut them with a pair of siccors about an inch or so from the end. This will separate them into single strings
