Hey guys, long time no talk. Some may remember me, some may not, been busy, new baby and all.
Question is, I have an area that I haven't been to yet this year since new growth has come on. It's a cutover, and I know it is going to be thick thick thick with all the rain we have had. Don't really have the option of hopping around from tree to tree. Hunted it last year from the only tree big enough for a stand and considered it a success.
ANYWAY....Ive got a weedeater that I can put one of those attachments on that look like a Skil saw. Think it's too late in the year to go in there and trim with that thing? Mostly saplings, briars and honeysuckle vines and the typical herbaceous growth after a clear cut. Looking to cut some shooting lanes. Im not hunting bone, just meat (if that sways ur answer). Typically Ive just used a bush axe, but have one of those cool weedeaters now with all the attachments.
I think you will be alright. don't take to much ,just enough to get there and to shoot. I heard of one guy cut small trails to his stand but he made them small and didn't cut anthind
that was higher than 4 feet off the ground. The deer felt comfortable that they where still covered yet were taking the path of least resistance

Here in the north I go by less is better but down there your plants stay longer. Usually by mid October we dont have to worry about to much being in the way. I like cutting lanes but I know some that like to use napalm covering 30 yards in all directions. Less is better.........

We did that all the time in the Elizabeth City area. If you do it now, it will be completely overgrown by Sept because things grow so fast down there. You can use some weed killer to keep it down or plan to cut it again in lat August. The meat hunting deer (young, does) won't care.
I personally think that some people get a little carried away about avoiding their hunting areas until hunting season. If you go in there now and do some cutting you might scare the deer out of an area for a couple hours, or maybe a couple days but it will not likely have any lasting effect on them.
You NC guys know how it is here. After 3 years of being clear cut, it gets THICK, especially with the rain we have had this year. I know less is more, but it is litterally unhuntable otherwise. Drove by it this afternoon, not so sure I even want to hunt itlol. I will but man is it thick. I doubt that a power trimmer this early would hurt, but never know. To be completely honest, for the deer I hunt, I doubt it would hurt the day of the hunt. Never really further than 300yds from humans (houses).
now would be the best time to cut your lanes, won't hurt your hunting and when you do get ready to go back the first of the season you should be able to do minumum triming just before hunting season opens
