Default Calling All Alakskan Experts!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey guys, my nephew, who was one of my favorite huntin' buddies, joined the Air Force in November. He made it through boot camp with flying colors, qualifying for marksman. He is now in tech-school where he will graduate at the end of March ... hereceived his orders to where he will be stationed ..... his #1 pick - ALASKA!! He is PUMPED!

His base will be at Emendorf ...... here is the deal .... a girl, who lives in Anchorage, got stationed in Eielson ..... she wants to trade with him ... she told him there is better hunting and fishing at Eielson..... she wants to be closer to home ...

I, well HE, has 1 question for you ..... is it true? He wants Alaska for the hunting and fishing ...so which base is the best????

Six of one half a dozen of the other. There's equally good moose hunting in or around both but there's better access to caribou around Fairbanks and slightly better bear around Anchorage. Fishing is going to have better access around Anchorage for salmon and halibut. Fly fishing grayling and trout may have a better edge near Fbnks. Access out of the state or anywhere by plane is going to be better from Anchorage but he won't likely have that concern being that he's in the military. Fairbanks has all the amenities of a city without the traffic and tourists that Anchorage has.

I'll let Rob Answer for Sheep for sure, but from what I gather...you are going to be traveling to sheep anyway. From the guys I have talked to living up there, Sheep are a draw system that you normally don't walk out the back porch and hunt. Maybe Kodiak will say otherwise, he would know better than anyone here.

I would be stoked for Mtn Goat more than anything. Personally, if I became a citizen up there, my main hunting priorities would lie with the animals that require a guide if you are a nonresident, sheep, brown bear, grizzly bear, mountain goat...If he got all those, and eventually moved away back down to the lower 48, he could still go up to AK to hunt Moose, Bou, Deer, Black Bear, etc without a guide. Food for thought, but to REALLY save some dough and make some memories..I would try for those high end guide required for out of stater type hunts.

You can hunt them off the road from Fairbanks on the Dalton Hwy. or fly in for them out of Anchorage, Fairbanks or lots of places in between. 50/50 split on that one depending on which mountain range you want to hunt and if you're lucky enough to draw a tag for the high end areas that require one, those are best done out of Anchorage but their proximity to Anc. is one reason they are by drawing. Not all sheep hunting is by draw though.

Check out some of the resources I posted in this post for more details: http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=3329436
