Default My doe season (Strike 1!!)

It was about 4:00 pm and I was just about home from eating dinner at my aunts place for Christmas when I looked at the g/f and said, "you know what, I'm going hunting!!" The place I went to this evening Is my neighbors land and I usually only hunt It 2 to 3 times through out the season come late season. It's about the only time It's any good. It's a small piece of land that borders a very small town of about 70 people. It's got a 2 acre CRP field that deer like to feed In every so often when there's snow on the ground. I knew It was to late to be going out hunting but I thought who cares being this Isn't my main area and It's getting late In the year (6 days of deer season left), plus shooting a deer on Christmas would be pretty kick ass- something I've never done but always wanted to do. It's a half mile walk so It took me a good half hour to get back there and to my surprise there was a light trail going through this CRP field. I set up on the ground with the wind direction In my favor with about 45 minutes of hunting light left. My shot was going to be anywhere from 8 yards to 20 yards If a deer would take this trail. 15 minutes after getting set up I'm paying attention to where the deer are suppose to be coming from (right of me). I'm looking In that direction when all of a sudden I hear a fawn bleat to my left and so I turn and look and there comes 3 deer (doe and 2 fawns) 25 yards to my left running right at me. My bow Is about a foot and a half In front of me and I can't move. They all 3 stop 8 to 10 yards away from me looking back from where they came from. I couldn't move an Inch and the shot and situation was perfect!![:@] They acted pretty nervous for a good 2 minutes or so and finally headed on out to a big woods that borders the land I'm hunting. I have no Idea what spooked them over to me. The good thing was that they never saw me so that spot should be good yet before my season runs out December 31st. I can tell ya this much that my bow will be In hand the next time I sit this spot this year!! I hope I'm allowed at least another strike or 2 before my remaining 6 days of hunting are over for the year. Dang It anyway!![>:] As the old saying goes "that's bow hunting for ya" I guess.

Don't feel bad... I goofed up today too. I was sitting in a spot with no cover and just relying on my whites. I had a 1.5 year old 3X3 go by at 20 yards and no clue. A little later a 2.5 year old 4X5 went by at 15 yards and no clue. I got sloppy and layed my bow down towards the end of the hunt. A really bigdoe popped out of brush 30 yards away. I slowly reached for mybow and she nailed me. [&:] [] She was a clever doe. At the start of my hunt I spotted her andput a stalk on her. Got within 40 yards when I ran out of cover. She wandered into the brush at that point andthat is where I stopped hoping she would wander back, plus there were some decent trails meeting in one spot right there( where the bucks came from ). 150 yards farther is a ladder standof the landowner's son in a shelterbelt. I don't think he hunted it much and hasn't been in it in over a good month. I seethe doecome out of the brush and get about 40 yards from the ladder stand where she stopped, looked up and then started head bobbing. She retreated into the brush again. Like I said she was a clever doe. Sadly I just made her smarter 2 hours later.

Late season I would rather hunta herd of bucks with all their eyes, ears and noses then one darn doe from the ground... oh and apparently fromthat guy's ladder stand too.
