Default Lone Wolf hunters got me thinking

Is it an advantage not to have a stand set year around? To just "pop" up in a location to ambush a deer seems smart to me.

We always state, first time we hunt a stand is the best chance. What if everytime was the first time? I can put a stand in 5 differnet spots for one location.5 differnet winds, I am really re-thinking the way I hunt. I think i have become lazy, I have grown to like my stands setup where I just pop in one. I tend to get stuck hunting those stands. I think I am going 100% mobile next year. I am not going to put up one set stand. Just going to go clear some lanes in th spring. Buy some of those hooks that help setup the lone wolfs a little quicker.

For those who use the sticks and hang on how long does it take to setup?

Not long after you get a routine down. I can actually set up just as quick using Ezy Climb treesteps and my Assault, but hanging sticks is much easier.

Germ, I hunt my hangons quite a bit but never leave my Assault in the same place.......thats why I save it when I want to change spots and I change spots within in area a lot!!!! Advantage of using sticks or steps and a light hangon stand for places a climber won't work. Besides, you can hide a hangon or place it for a better shot easier than a climber.

Has really been the key to a lot of my success. I just had the best year of my life bowhunting with 3 bucks( 2 pope and youngs, and a nice 9 point), plus a mature doe, hunting this way. I also rarely have to clear lanes by getting up an additional few ft and hunt 25-30 ft high..opens up more shot opportunites and helps with the scent issue imo. I actually enjoy hauling my stand/sticks in and out each hunt(keeps me in shape and is a great feeling of accomplishment, picking and choosing the hunt tree for that particular hunt). It is so easy to hang this stuff once you have done it 10 times or so....very easy and a piece of cake and the excitement of a new hunt each time usually pays off. Plus there is nothing to get stolen or weathered or chewed on by squirrels. Of course..u know this...as I have been singing this same song for the last 3 seasons. Time frame is 20 minutes tops to setup. Tear down is around 5 minutes.

Edit: My opinion is to get 6 LW sticks as I am 6'3" and I always use at least 5 or 6 to get where I want to. The pic below is the last trreestand hunt I did this year, and resulted in a kill. Notice the 6 steps and the advantage of a self leveling platform on a treestand...a MUST imo.My other advice is to get yourself a Hooyman saw..a gr8 tool for the portable bowhunter.

I take my time and am still setup (4 sticks and stand)in about 20 minutes. You're in there moving around anyway so speed of setup is not the issue. I try to get setup a good bit of time before I expect any action. To give you an idea: I expected deer action starting as early as 2:30pm in this one spot. I was setup at 11:30. Granted, that is a bit ectreme but I was hunting another area about a 1/4 mile away that morning. Anyway, the action started at about 2:50 and the hunting was over by 3:15 LOL.

HCH's pic is a perfect example of the advantages of using a light, easy hanging stand in conjunction with the sticks. No way to use a climber in that tree(maybe not even in that area).

I'm primarily a climber guy. I have a few sets setup before season in known travel coridors that produce well. But most other times, I'm somewhere in my climber. I guess I just like the comfort of it over my hang ons.

Another thing, is that since I got this Lone Wolf climber, being mobile got a whole lot easier for me. It packs so well and works so quietly its easy to just pop up in a new spot.

Cougar...the trees in my midwest woods are not compatible for a climber, for the most part. You are right.

Disadvantages aswell as advantages.

I sweat too much to do this (I think). Im going to try the millenum stand route.. just prehang alot of sticks and receivers, then carry in the stand with you, it hangs in seconds and only weighs 15 lbs at the most comfortable stand on the market. I can't wait to give it a try.
