This is a pic of my 1st ever buck with a bow. Back on Nov. 14th, (no pics from field) I was rattling and I heard a leaf crunch and he was 10 feet from me. I still had the rattle bag in hand so no time for a shot. He walked away and after 15 min turned and came back. He only made it 150 yards. I am very happy with this buck. The rack is very odd but yet it makes me wonder what he could've looked like. Do you think it could of been just an awesome non-typical or could it have become a typical?

There is no telling what he could have been and we'll never know.
Any idea of his age at the time of you tagging him?
If he's a 1.5, that's a dandy set for a youngin and his potential was incredible. If he was a 2.5, no telling what crazy rack he might have sported next year and so on. Again, possibilities are endless but one thing is certain,
He would have been what he is now, dead by a happy hunter I hope. Only way to know for sure would have beento let him go andhope to see him in a few years. Looks to have had alot going on to only be a 1 1/2, like Rob said if he was only 1 1/2 go look for his daddy who gave him half those those genetics.
He was a pretty small bodies deer. I'd guess I got 50 pounds of meat off him. Maybe I'm wrong, and let me know if I am, (still trying to learn ageing) but doesn't a younger deer's antlers go more straight up (like this pic) and older deer's antlers seem to veer out towards their ears?

I have some bucks on my property in the thumb that we call candle wax bucks....ugly racks ...young deer that carry horns that look like candle wax....I've even seen bucks that look like they had all their tips cut off flat while they were in velvet...
Not sure of the genetic reasoning....However...Since we started hammering the doe(s) in the late 90's..I have not seen any candle wax bucks.....only 1 or 2 here and there...
