Default Dealing with the cold

I was hunting this weekend and had to wear long underwear, sweats, a thick one piece camo deal, thick blaze orange bibs, and a thick blaze orange jacket to keep warm in the stand for 4 hours at a time. I had to wear the blaze orange because it is also gun season for deer. It was about 20ºF in Northeastern, Minnesota, windy and snowy. Not ideal hunting weather at all and it's only November, so it is going to get a lot worse. I have not had any opportunities while in the stand at all this season, but I have until the end of the year.

While in the stand this weekend, I thought that I would try to draw back on my 82nd, just to see how it felt with all the extra clothing on. It wasn't that tough to get it back, but I couldn't get the string to my nose because of all the bulk.

What do you guys do to deal with this problem aside from hunting in warmer states and earlier in the season?

Obviously I need to use less bulky clothing, but still stay warm. What do you recommend?

The main thing Is to layer your clothes the right way. Don't wear stuff that's to tight. The tighter you are the harder It Is to pull your bow back. I hate hunting In 0 degree weather. It's a bitch pulling a 65lb recurve back when your loaded full of clothes. I just learned to layer my clothes better when putting on a ton of more clothes.

I always try and practice shooting with my layers on to see what kind of adjusting i might need to deal with. i try and make sure that my string wont slap my jacket or catch my zipper or anything. I definately cant shoot without being warm though so you have to figure out how to shoot with the bulk. it sucks and thats why i favor hunting while its warmer so much more.

I gotta go down south. I'm thinking about going to FSU for my masters in marine biology.

IDI Gear. It uses insultex as an insulator andis by far the warmest and lightest weight hunting clothing you can get.

Come on down south. I'm heading to stand in about a half hour...and it's 24, here, this AM. I shot my biggest buck here when it was 12 deg.

Balmy, huh?

A good warm baselayer with some fleece, good sock liners and socks and good boots does the job for me. I'll hunt in weather down to the 20* mark in just a base layer shirt, a long sleeve T, a fleece, another LS T, and a button down camo shirt, on top with a base, pants and NON-insulated coveralls on the bottoms. And I shoot just fine with all of this on.

I'll check out that IDI Gear. Joe's is having a big sale, so I was going up there anyway. Thanks BigBulls.
