Default 08 Kansas buck - team 40 scores

Back from my annual trip to Kansas. This is the most anticipated week of the year for me. The guys had several large deer on cam and I chose to hunt a big 5X5 that was making weekly visits to a stand location behind an abandoned farm house on one of their ranches. This would be the second year I had pursued this deer and the third our group had attempted in harvesting him. The last pic they had was on 10/29 and I arrived on 11/01.

I spent three and half days behind the house, hunting morning and evenings. The temps were in the high 70s during the day and deer movement was minimal. In the time in the stand, I had seen one nice 140" eight and a really big seven, several does, but no ten. The wind had been hard out of the southwest all three days. On the night of the fourth day, the weather was supposed to change and the wind shift out of the north. My buddy and I made the call to move to a creek bed on the farm a ½ mile away. We knew the creek was holding deer, mainly does and with all the chasing we"d seen I thought he could be holding up waiting for the does to turn.

The night started off great, does moved in early around 4 PM. I got winded once, but it didn"t effect the entire evening. I say 4 bucks and around 10 does. I was very pleased and knew that tomorrow would hold a better opportunity to see the big 10. Thursday would be my last day to hunt. I began packing my pack, waiting to lower my bow until all shooting light had disappeared. I had 5 does picking beneath me as I slowly put up my gear and watched the fading light. Just as I finished packing, I looked down on the does and all heads were turned towards my left. I looked down and there stood a huge bodied deer with some great tines. I took a quick glance, made out his G2s as the deer I had hunted. He stood no more than 12 yards from my stand and light was fading very fast. I picked up my bow, drew and released. The arrow smacked the deer and he dropped immediately. I had spined the deer due to the steep angle. I quickly reloaded and waited for him to remain still and placed another arrow under his front right leg. It was over".he was down for good.

In the end, a beautiful 6.5 yr old, 275 lb 5X5. Once again Kansas pays big.
