This will link you to the USGS download page which will allow you to get topos (in various scales), aerial photos and many other items. You can also try a program called USAPhotoMaps. It is free and gives you access to DOQQs (aerial photos).

Search to see if your county has a GIS website, Lots of cool free info there. along with ariels, topos, boundaries, landowners, etc.
x2 Also try your state DNR website. WI's has a very nice GIS program that I use a lot. Also, if all else fails or if you want something else kinda cool. The Mossyoak.com forums have a mapping program (free, just sign up) where you can do aerials, topos, or topo overlays on aerials. Pretty cool stuff. The program is a bit slow at times, but the results are nice
