Default Passed on my first P&Y of the season.

I went out for only the 2nd time tonight in Ill. I have hunted up north in Wis a couple of times earlier then went moose hunting for nearly 2 weeks and ehrn I came back, I caught a cold! [X(]I've been waiting for the right wind to hunt one of my favorite stands, the stand I got the 170 from last year. Well tonight the wind was right. The stand is in between 2 doe bedding areas. At about 5:30 PM I has a doe come flying past my stand never giving me a shot. A few minutes later a small forky comes trailing her and stops giving me a 19 yard shot. About a half an hour later it was starting to get dark and the wind was really picking up, I spotted a 2 1/2 yo 7 pointer about 14 yards from my stand. Between the wind and all the rain we had last night, hearing them was difficult. While I was watching the 7 pointer, I catch movement and turn to see a 135" 3 1/2 yo 8 pointer. He comes in and stops 11 yards from my stand quarting away! [:-]Well I decide to hold off for a couple of reasons. One, this is the spot where I have an old doe that comes into estrus early. I know that if I keep my eye on her, when she starts getting closer to being ready to breed, she'll attract more bucks. Some of those will be more of what I'm looking for. My goal is to get a clean 5x5 10 pointer or something big, like in the high 140's+. I believe that by being patient, I'll get my chance.

Anyway, while he's standing there the doe comes flying past again with the forky on her tail. This in turn inspires the 7 and the big 8 to give chase and gives me a chance to slip out of there. I'll be back!

If any of you guy's see this kind of behavior, keep on it!

Good luck.

Sounds awesome Greg. I saw my 2nd ever P&Y today and he was chasing a doe around and made a few scrapes. It was an amazing experience.

Haven't seen an antler anywhere near a doe yet here. Patience tho.

Good luck Greg. Must be nice hunting wt in Wis., then moose for 2 weeks and then Illinois for more wt. By the way, I have yet to see any chasing or anything close to that yet. Wednesday I witnessed 4 bucks traveling together and none of them seemed interested in any does. Hope that changes here soon.

The moose hunt was great! However, whitetails are my #1 favorite and the moose hunt did suck some of my vacation time away from them, but I'll live.

mauser06,
4 seasons ago that wouldn't have happened. When I first started hunting for trophy whitetails, the hardest thing to do was pass on some nice looking bucks. But the fact is, you can't make a P&Y out of a 120" buck. Their antlers don't stretch enough!

After 14 seasons of trying for P&Y bucks, I decided to step it up a notch and try for bucks in the upper 140 or better range. Again, it was tough to pass on sure P&Y bucks up to the 135" range. This is the 2nd 135" I've passed on. I'll tell you, my bow was pointed right at him and I felt myself starting to draw acouple of times! But I've proven it to myself many times before that if I'm patient, I'll get my chance. I also know that the higher you set your goals there is a greater chance of not reaching it and I'm OK with that. I don't have to get a buck every year to make me happy, although it is my plan to do so.

Good luck guys
