Hey guys, I don't post much in the archery section, but I do read most of the posts here.
I started archery hunting in1999 and broke my collar bonethe second week of PA's archery season. Then in 2000I was off tocollege for four years andthatdidn't allow me to hunt much. Then I moved to Virginia and picked up a bow again in 2006. Got a doe that first year and then Ibroke a cam on my bow last year when I shot at a doe.The bottom limb and cam hit my tree stand rail. It was a PSE fireflite express, upgraded to a parker wildfire xp and spent most of last season adjusting to a shorter, lighter bow.
This season in Virginia, first day 10/4 I took a doe. I made a poor shot at 25 yards on a slightly quartering doe and got guts withsome blood. I took to the trail after only 2 hours, knowing I should wait til morning. I jumped her out of her bed so I backed out.Went in the next morning with my weimaranerand found her about 400 yards from where I jumped her the previous night and about 600 yards from where the shot was taken. Turns out I got the back of one lung and guts.
Last night I was in my stand about 5:00, I left work about 20 minutes early. I saw two deer out of range and couldn't see what they were at 5:10. Had a fawn at 30 yards at 5:30, but it was awful small and never presented a shot. Fifteen minutes later I see a deer, a buck coming straight for me. I stand and hook up my release, he turns and will pass in front of me at 22 yards. I'm shaking uncontrollably at this point, I take a few deep breaths and calm down a little bit. I draw as he passes behind a tree and mouth bleat to stop him. The arrow went right behind the shoulder, huge mule kick and he takes off. He falls after 20 yards and I can't believe it, but he gets up and does the drunk walk. He tries to run, but is staggering pretty good. I know he's hit good and I sit back down before I fall out of my stand. I watch through my binoculars as he goes down right about 100 yards from the shot.
I waited about ten minutes, climbed down, found my arrow, it passed through and buried about 9" into the ground. Great blood, I take up the trail and there's blood everywhere. I went to the buck and found that the arrow got both lungs and cut the arteries above the heart. He was dead in about 10 seconds.
Before you call man law violation, I have pictures of both, but can't post at work because our web browser blocks photo hosting sites and dial up at home is too slow. I can email the pictures if someone is willing to post them. Thanks.
This was my second doe and first buck with a bow. I'm super pumped. We've had some great weather in Virginia recently and I'm really looking forward to the next coulple weeks.
Thats awesome bro congrats! Whereabout are you in VA? We have had some pretty nice conditions in the past week... starting to feel like fall for a change!
