Default Where to rattle

Kinda new to rattling. Haven't ever seen or heard deer fighting except on t.v. And the deer are always in the open when they are fighting. Now my question is where do you rattle from? Do you favor the field edges or is it better to rattle in heavier timber or heavier cover? From just reading other posts I've kinda picked up on just to tickle the antlers 1st and then get to the hard hitting. Does anyone have a time frame of the way that you do your rattling sequences?
