There's a sticky at the top of the page.......RE: recovery. Each hit requires a different approach from the hunter.

It's a good read. Read it. It'll answer ALL of your questions.

All depends on the shot for me and how the deer reacts after the shot. If I shoot and there isn't a doubt in my mind I got a heart/lung shot then I will be hearing/seeing the deer crash within the next 20 seconds. Hence I know right then and there the deer is dead. Even then I'll wait about 10 to 15 minutes to let the area settle down a bit.

If I shoot from a distance of 20 yards or more and the shot looks good withthe deer kicking its hind legs out like a horse then I know I shot the deer with a fatal shot. If I don't hear it or see it crash I will wait at least an hour if not more.

Anything else is questionable and then I will wait a couple hours or maybe 3 to 4 hours.

I shot a deer last weekend and the shot looked good but I didn't hear a crash. I only waited a half hour and sure enough came up on the deer while she was still alive albeit barely. If she had one more ounce of energy she woulda been gone. Lucky for me she had lost too much blood.
