Default Contact Grunts

I am a little confused on the "contact grunt". I mean i have used many grunts in my day, but the contact grunt is supposed to be a "all year, any season" type of a grunt, right?
But Im not sure im doing it right.
does anyone here know of a place on the web or even a home recording of how i am supposed to use it?
how long, how many times should i use it?
what is the IDEAL situation, if any?
