Heres a quick question on the make up of a white oak tree (well any oak tree for that matter)....
Say for instance we have a 100 year old white oak tree, thus it will have 100 tree rings on the trunk if we were to cut it. Out of those 100 tree rings, how many of them are actually responsible for transporting water through out the tree. And, of those rings that transport water, are they on the inside of the rings (the middle of the tree) or the outside (near the bark)?

(kidding. No idea....but a SUPER weird question!)
It is a very wierd question but it is the the xylem which is located in the inside of the tree it is the part that we burn for firewood
Excactly the xylem is used to transport food from the top of the tree/plant (anything above the ground) to anything under the ground i.e roots, and the phloem (spelling i thinkg) does the opposite.

Every one of those "annual growth rings" carried water. Each ring justs shows the growth rate of the tree during that time period (one year). Wider gapped rings mean a better growth year. Usually wetter years will show upas a fatter ring. This applies to most tree's.

Water is carried in the outer lighter colored rings and the darker colored center of thewood is called the heartwood and is dead and no longer currently carries water

Bingo. If you have a tree that has, say, 100 rings, it is only the outermost 3-5 rings that actually still transport water to the tree. The inside 95% of the rings are "dead" in that they no longer function to keep the tree alive, in fact, 95% of all trees are "not living" just a useless bit of information to throw into the conversation at your next cocktail party

LikeI said, every one of those rings "carried" water during that year of growth. Also, a tree is not at all "dead" inside. Actually, it's quite alive! Where do you think a tree gets it's plyabilityfrom? They haveplenty of moisture inside.Just because the inside of the tree doesn't grow, that doesn't make it "dead".[8D]
