Default Anybody use smoke as a cover scent?

I was watching a TV hunting show a couple years ago (I'm guessing).....and there was a husband/wife team where the gentleman used smoke as a cover scent in lieu of scent elimination measures.

He'd start a little fire with kindling.....and wave the smoke over himself just before going to stand.

I know deer smell smoke from brush fires and such in the wild all the time. Does anyone here ever employ such a tactic?

I"™ve used it before, but couldn"™t tell you that it worked like a charm, I always try to hunt so the wind is in my favor, but I think it is a fairly smart strategy"¦ I still like the scent eliminating spray over that. (I"™d rather not smell at all).

BUT~ when put in a situation where I don"™t have spray w/ me, and I know I smell bad (say hunting in the back country for days on end, or just straight forgetting my spray and knowing I"™ve been sweating), I still will use this as the most basic form of cover scent.

Yeah I have tried this a few times. Like HuntingEd I am not so sure that it worked but I am not so sure that it didn't. I think I read in a hunting magazine years ago that this is what the native americans used to do. The article was about a man who has a school that teaches people how to stalk a deer to within a foot or so. I remember the man said it was dishonorable to kill a deer if you could not touch the fletching of the arrow after you released it into the deer. Now that would be a fun way to hunt. But back to the topic. I don't think smoke would scare away deer and it does remain a strong scent all hunt long. You might give it a try.

Deer can smell and detect many more then one scent at a time. IMO all you are doing is adding another scent into the mix.

Hey, but if you believe in it, go for it.

DISCLAIMER: I HAVE NEVER USED SMOKE AS A COVER SCENT.

I have never used this tactic either, I have always tried to stay away from the camp fire with my hunting clothes, I never thought of using it as a cover scent!!!!! I know we always have a camp fire going when we are there, maybe the wind could blow it all through the woods. I have always used cedar for a cover as it is everywhere on our place...

Ive never used it before but I bet it would work here. The places I hunt get burned often to keep the under growth down and so I think the deer are used to it.

We would hang ourclothes around the campfire when we where in Africa. Most of the animals are use to smelling the burning fires made by the natives and dont think anything of it.

seen a similar article a few years back but never have tried it - also seen them using smoke canisters for bears filling it with honey or some kind of attractant

I have used smoking sticks before they are called "deer sense" I have seen mixed results from deer walking up and pawing the spot the stick was located or blowing and getting the hell outta dodge
