Default Alright... Can you make the grade?

Ok.. I thought I would do a little grading here for any one who is interested.....

Here is an aerial of two properties side by side I have permission to hunt. The one to the North I have had longer than the one to the South.

The white dots are either where I found sheds or dead heads.... That is all the info I am giving as far as "deer sign".

Wind is mostly out of the SW. Mark the map up in paint shop with stand or ground blind sites and I will let you know how I feel you did.

First an overview of both properties and some of the surroundings.... Followed by close ups of both properties.

In the 3rd pic, hunting the south propeerty with a south west wind, id hunt the point between the ponds and the hayfield. also dependant upon deer bedding areas.

Both properties look like crap to me. I think you should just forget hunting them this year and hit all your other areas. I will howerver offer my services to check in on these sites from time to time for you just so you can get an update of what is going on!

I need to learn how photoshop works. In the meantime I'm setting up on the edge of the hayfield and junkyard, this allows me to have a funnel point and good spot to look for car parts.

OK, here is what I see. I'll put explanations for each numbered stand below the maps.

1. A point on a field edge leading to beans always seems to be a good entry point for deer. By placing the stand out toward the tip of the finger you are allowing the natural funnel to bring deer closer to your stand. This would be an evening set up.

2. Little outcoves in fields seem to attract deer as well. It is as though the change in the shape of the edge gives them a sense of security.

3. Inside corner on a bean field. Nuff said.

4. Not only is this a nice corner stand, but the cover also seems to taper in on the opposite side creating a great pinch point. I would bet there is a lot of traffic in that area. This stand would be a good place to catch bucks cruising through while looking for does.

1. See #4 above.

2. This spot immediately stood out to me. Sure it's a corner, but it's also pinched off by the grass field on the other side, and because of the irregular shape of the field is a bit of an outcove as well. This looks like a buck killing spot to me.

3. Small outcove. Probably not a great stand in a hay field with all of the beans to the north, but an option.

4. Small point. Same as above.

5. This stand will be greatly dependant on what food source is in there. It is a good location, but the beans will draw and hold the deer unless it is a favorable food source such as corn.

Other things I see are good opportunity between the two swampy areas, but without boots on the ground to see how the area funnels the deer to creek crossings it is hard to pick a stand. However, I'd be willing to bet that bucks bed in those swamps and travel down to the beans to feed. Also there is no mention of hard mast. If there is any hard mast in those woods those are great spots as staging areas as the deer head out to feed at night and head back from feeding in the morning.

It looks like you've got plenty of opportunity there Scott. You should have some good luck in that area.

Hey Bry,

Are you watching me hunt in Limerick again? j/k We have several spots that are almost identical to this one. I agree with most of your spots. I would have to hunt that swamp, he doesnt mention anythign about being able to get a stand in there, but if you can thats where I would be. I would try and catch those bucks that go in that swamp and bed down, coming down to stage prior to dark to check that lil out cover and the field. I have shot several bucks out of swampy area so I would lean to go there. If this was us, here in PA the season opens just prior to the buck going Ape Sh*t, so I would think they would still be using that swamp to bed and not to wild about chasing into that field on the first few days.

That lil out cove gives great cover for the doe, with the SW wind they can smell whats coming from the tree line, and also see whats out ahead of them in the field. My #1 would be somewhere in the funnel down from the swamp and try and catch amature buck staging. (North side of the cove)

I wasnt to keen on the south property, I would hunt the North side of the South poperty where you have labeled #3 n #4 on the north piece. I would expect anything from the south to use that funnel up the left side of the hay field and head for the bottom left hand corner of the bean field where your # 3 stand is. Again if your buck hunting I would try and use these as staging area.

Hope all is well Bry, give me a shout. Im heading to Mont MD on opening day in MDon that peice I told you about last year. Has some great possibilites from what we've seen so far. We have more then one stand with plenty of acreage. and I take bribes in the form of Miller Light

Damien, good to hear from ya buddy. Long time no see on the boards. I don't want to hijack the thread so I'll keep on topic. I agree about the north side of the outcove. I meant to put a dot there as well, but missed it. Good call on the swamps, I feel the same way. I'm not real crazy about the southern property either, but it does have some potential in pinch points for bucks cruising to and from other areas.

I'll drop you a PM when I get a chance and we'll catch up.
