I know we should be really good at understanding the food source(s) of the prey we're hunting.....but I saw something in my driveway that fell out of a red oak.....that I have never seen (and it may be perfectly normal).
So it isn't part of the vegetation itself? It certainly gave every appearance that it was. It was "attached" just like a leaf. I suppose it could have been attached around the leaf stem, though.
I just thought it was interesting. Thanks, Fran.
Edit** 2 minutes of research and it IS part of the plant tissue responding to an insect.

I think it IS part of the vegetation, but isan abnormal outgrowth caused by some kind of bug activity. The bug uses it as a cocoon.
It's called a "gall." Not a fruit. I think it's some kind of growthcasing around a bug. Like a cocoon.
That's exactly what that is. The KING knows all.Seriously, that is a gall, and they are harmless. Being a tree guy, I see them all the time. You can see them on various trees.Quik described it perfectly, would you have expected any different?

I saw one of those the other day laying on the ground. I had no idea what it was. I was going to step on it to see what came out but didn't.
I learned something today.
