1. I make sure she's dead quiet when drawing and shooting
2. I make sure the string and cables are going to be good through the year, if not I replace no later than June
3. I make sure she hits where she aims with a BH I am going to use.

Only thing I would add to Germ's reply would be to check all the mounting screws for rust and clean or replace.

Asking for a bow tune up will address most things, cam timing, serving wear, condition of the strings and cables, draw length adjustments if you have had string stretch, rest settings, centershot, making sure your arrows are properly spined and flying well out of your setup etc.
Stay away from the box stores find a proshop that the target archers use,get to them away from the august, september, october rush, they will be able to spend more time with you and your bow.

Have it checked out (or do it yourself) for proper centershot. As others said make sure everything including string and cables and tubed peeps are in good condition. If you use a plunger button or string loop make sure they are new enough to not cause issues as the season progresses.

Once everything is in fine mecahnical order. Shoot, expirament with broadheads. Find the set-up that puts your mind at total ease.

1. Check the string and cable
2. check paper tune
3. shoot and sight in with field points
4. turn over to broadheads about a month out from season to ensure hit same as field points
5. go back to field points to save the target

There isn't much to go wrong with my recurve but I give it a good check over. Do what Germ said and you should be good to go.
