Default I have access to land, that Ive never....accessed, Turkeys?

Im tired of hearing you all talk about turkeys while i set back and watch..I dont have any turkeys where i hunt, they pass through, even have there youngins there, but the dont roost.... IDK why, it looks like a perfect place to me... but whatever they want i guess...

BUT i do have access to some land up the road that i hardly ever go too... sometimes i would walk through with the -06... but thats about it, it gets deer hunted i think, Ive never even thought about turkeys.... IDK anything about turkey hunting.... I may be off tommorrow, If i ride up there what should i be looking for? What do i need to be doing, or am i just too late for this year, which is fine, no biggy, I got the trout stream opening up Next week.Just kinda thought, "hey if there, why not try?"

So put yourself in this situation.... Youve just got roughly 75-100acres to scout for turkeys, and your going tommorrow to look around. the old man that owns it, is in his 90's so if they aint pecking in his front yard, he aint gonna be able to help, the terrain is steeper, than what im used too, with a logging road leading up and a hollow down under. Mostly wooded.
My season:
[*]April 12-May 3:
[ul][*]One-half hour before sunrise until 12 noon each day. [/ul][*]May 5-May 17:
[ul][*]One-half hour before sunrise to sunset. [/ul]

What are you going to do to know whether youve got turkey or not??

if the logging road is somewhat clean dirt, look for wing drag marks and tracks from strutting Toms. In my area they tend to roost around water, Well used roost trees will have alot of droppings under them. look for feathers laying in these areas where they pitch up and down. check fields for birds in them especially when its raining. They favor fields when its raining.
look for scratchings where they have been racking back the forest floor in search of food, these places are very obvious.
good luck, let us know what you find

My recommendation is to stay out of the woods this close to game time, and wake up early and hike to a nice high vantage point you can hear for quite a ways..........and listen. Don't make a noise, don't try and shock gobble them, and be as sneaky as possible going in and out. I'd also avoid walking too far into the woods before light, you don't want to bump them off the roost.

Just MHO. I'd listen and observe from a distance and avoid getting in there till game time.

Under no circumstances would I call to these birds till you have a bow/gun in your hands.

I know noting about turkey hunting, but why not call until im ready to thwack one? I actually thought calling would let me know if there was anything in the area... I know nothing about this place in relation to turkeys.

I wouldn't be afraid to call (VERY LITTLE.....just enough to entice a gobble)......but I SURE wouldn't let them see me.

To be safe....I'd err on RJ's side....and NOT call...at all.

Best scouting practice I know is to lay eyes on 'em

I NEVER call before it's legal. If they are in there and unpressured, they will gobble on their own. You never know when one is closer than you think and you call......they bust you and then they are educated. I've had to hunt in the past birds that were called to by people pre season. Nothing worse than calling an educated bird. I like them good and dumb. [8D]

I'd be curious to hear what Rob has to say about this but I never call before season. I will listen though.

I never call my own areas pre season but have been guilty of doing it on the way home from work I regulary spook my birds from the fields but there used to that. I have to walk out the door sometimes you know I did forget to mention listening from afar like Matt mentioned

I wont call this time of year. I'd stay out of the woods also. Your safest bet is to just park the rig on the road, get out and listen. It wont take long to figure out if there are birds in there. The best times are dawn and dusk, I'd do this at every opportunity from now 'till opening day. Pattern their roost spots as best as possible and try to catch 'em on the fly down when it's time.
