since its the "offseason" and most of us are shooting foam and paper...
lets hear some of the crazy things youve seen or had happen at the range...
last year at a 3d shoot a buddy from work brought his son..hes a teenager and doesnt shoot much...his arrow glanced the back of the target and went sailing and away....poorly setup target..nothing behind it but a downward hillside...scary sound of an arrow flyying through trees for a 100yds or so we guess...
a couple weeks ago at an indoor range, a guy was paper tuning his bow...said it was doing goofy things all morning and not shooting right...they played around with the rest timing and this and that shooting through the paper...he drew back and all the sudden stuff just went flying...i thought either the bow blew up or the arrow blew up....he said he had no idea what happend...he was shooting a thumb release or BT...let me tell you...it made a nice hole in the paper!!! arrow went through the paper and so did the release...i guess he let go of the release...he swears he hit full draw and "felt something pop" but the bow was fine and he kept shootin after that...i quit shootin and left after that...he was a wreck and should have stopped shooting...and i didnt wanna be there when he flung an arrow or his bow did blow up(noone DID look it over too well to see if it WAS damaged..)
anyone else???

The club I belong to has a very poorly set up range in regards to safety. The 50 yard target range is shooting at the drive leading to the clubhouse. There is a 15 foot high wall of rubber stops that should be sufficient to stop any flyers. I was shooting at the 80 yard range which is down below and right of the 50 yard range. I was shooting at 60 yards when I heard an arrow go skipping across the road about 50 yards tomy left. The guy who shot it came down and asked if I saw his arrow. I told him I heard it and helped him find it. After shooting a little longer another arrow came skipping across. I asked him what he was aiming at and he said the 50 yard target. The backstop is a good 10 feet above the top of the 50 yard bail. I came to find that he was shooting an old Bear Whitetail Hunter that he had inheirited (he was in his late 50's), and this was the first time he ever shot a bow! I suggested that he stick to 15 yards and in to start, but he was a bit of a wise guy and said, "Ahhh, most of the guys at this club don't even have insurance on their cars so I'm not worried about it. Besides what are the chances of me getting it in their window? I can't even hit that big giant wall." We had a good laugh and I promptly packed up my things and quit shooting for the day.
Its not a bow range story but I was at a gun range with my dad when a DRUNK guy showed up with 4 or 5 guns...
How we knew he was drunk... well he went out to setup his target and couldnt even get back to the bench in a strait line. He almost fell over a couple of times. It was a little scary.[&:]
Needless to say he was kicked out prettyquickly and Im glad for that.

Any mention of the term "range" and I think of one thing. I was qualifying a group of shooters to carry concealed firearms when a late arrival came up and told us that there had been a plane crash and there were reports of another plane missing.......if you haven't guessed, yes, it was Sept. 11th. A couple of the guys were National Guardsmen and headed into town to check in. The rest of us had a moment of silence and resumed qualification while those not on the line sat in their cars, listening to what was being reported on the radio.
To this day I think of thatexperience anytime I go to a range, archery or otherwise.

Once at the gun range, a dad brought his 11-12 year old son to teach him how to shoot. Since it was his first time, the kid seemed really uncomfortable if not scared out of his wits. On his very first shot with the 30.06 he was so afraid of the gun that he didn't have it properly shouldered. Instead, he had it a few inches in front of his shoulder/collar bone area obviously not wanting to touch it. Can you guess what happened when the gun kicked back? Yep, snapped his collar bone like a dry stick.

the gun range that i go to is surrounded by timber and i went in late october during the pre-rut and while we were shooting a nice lil 10 point came running in chasing a doeinto the range and people started shooting at him when they said they were shooting at the targets. the were bullet explosions in the dirt all around that poor buck, but luckily no one did hit him. when he realizedthat he was in a firing squad he left that doe in the dust lol

i was out hunting some state land with my dad and he wanted to see how my rifle shot so we drove to a field. As we were finishing up loading our guns i hear a shot. and it's close. iducked from reaction and pulled a 360 trying to figure out who was shooting at us. My dad's gun. is one of those lever-action 30-30's with a half-hammer saftey...aparantly it malfunctioned and didn't hold the hammer back. He about shot his toes off.
