Default Why not shoot them?

If a spike is always gonna be a spike, why not go ahead and shoot them?

Because that is a myth and so not true. Aaron, you've been around these boards long enough to not believe that. A spike could be the next world record or a trophy P&Y if given the chance to grow.

Of course there are different levels of spikes, a spike could be a late born first year deer or a genetic flawed 2.5 year old. You need to know the difference before determining what to do with said deer.

second, I'm not filling a tag on a little guy (unless he's like a 4.5 yr old spike)

As others have said,a spike will not always be a spike. Many studies have been done following the life span of bucks.Charles Alsheimer,Michael Biggs,James Kroll to name ones that immediately come to mind.A lot of record book bucks started out as spikes.

If you see a 5-6 year old spike, and there's plenty of food, then that's a spike that needs to be taken. If legal. That's my biggest complaint about mandatory point restrictions. It lets genetically inferior bucks live to a ripe old age.

FROM WHAT I'VE READ SPIKES ARE USUALLY BUCKS WITH POOR FOOD IN THE AREA. BUT OVER TIME AND BETTER QUALITY OF FOOD, THEY DO GROW BIGGER.

Well Buckmaster..I'm sure you were just joking but many many seasoned folks believe this myth..just like the mythif you shave it will come back thicker, ask Germ how thats workin...

But there was just a thread where many folks get surprised that the deer they shot was a button buck..some things amaze me.
