Default Deer lease opportunity....What would you say?

Guy that cuts my hair.....knows some guys that he says have a REALLY good thing going on. 15 guys.....2200 acres. 100" minimum.

Took me about 2 minutes on the phone to find out that these guys hunt the entire 2200 acres (no anctuary)....and that they have "their" spots picked out. They divide the property into equal tracts (amongst members)....and there was an opening on a specific tract.

Now....let's be realistic......if it was one of the really good tracts......ya think they'd "maybe" switch before offering it up? I mean....is there ANY doubt in your minds (there wasn't in mine) that I'd be sucking the bottom of the barrel? How many rifle stands would a deer have to walk by to get to the fifteenth man's tract?

Politely said "no thanks". I'm wondering what it's like at YOUR leases, though. Anyone?

2200 acres is allot of woods. Who says you would all be out there at the same time?

146 acres (your fair portion) is enough to build your own sanctuary and plots, etc..........and turn your patch into a real honey hole. When they do venture off your patch though, at least you know the sub 100" deer your passing aren't going to get shot. Win/win in my opinion.

You would have enough control over a large enough piece to make a much larger difference than what you will be able to do at your patch at home. I'd try to understand the costs, and if I could afford it and it made sense, I'd think real seriously about it. I'd of course be much more interested in buying, but if I wasn't in that position a lease can be a great situation.

$700 a year? That would be my cost.

Holy hell, I'd be all over that. I spent 2x that much last year in gas money alone driving to and from my place, and I have neighbors that shoots everything that walks. It may be the "bottom of the barrel" now, but with work and some planning, you can turn that into a real honey hole. I really think the work you are trying to do at the property close to home would be much more effective in a place like this.

Doesn't matter who else is out there, Schultzy. You are relegated to YOUR area.

I'd be very tempted to say yes as I only hunt public land. I would probably do it.

And honey holes can dry up fast....you never know what the rut will bring in terms of roaming bucks.
