I have been dipping for a long time and always worried about spooking deer while chewing I gut it about worrie about the smell. I have herd of people dipping skoal apple. Does any one know if this bothers deer and what kinds are best. Im straight fan myself
My guess is that a mature whitetail will smell the tobacco, regardless of flavor. I chewed quite a bit when I first started hunting, to relax me and calm the nerves but I quit for fear of spooking deer.
Just my opinion though.

Out of 70 some whitetails that I have taken, about 70 some were with a dip in my mouth. I don't know if bothers them or not, but if I can't dip in the woods, I can't hunt.

I dip Copenhagen and havn't noticed it bothering them. I once had a doe smell and eat my old dip under my stands. I'm sure that they smell it, I'm just not convinced that they associate it with danger!

I have been dipping for 20+ years and have always dipped while on stand. However, this year I had two deer bust me and I am sure it was the dip. Both were does, one young one. She came in on a trail that 4 others had came in on earlier and passed by without any worries. I put a dip in, 10 mins later she came by and at 25 yards looked right at me and turn and left the area. The wind was in their favor, so maybe she just picked up a little human scent, but my gut tells me that my Kodiak sold me out. Since then, no dip for me until I am back at the truck.

For me it's part of the outdoor expirience. I enjoy my Cope.. I've never seen a bad reaction based on spit. Heck it's now widely accepted to P from the stand. If I feel I'm really in a core area and want to take every precaution. I'll put some scent killer in a bottle and spit in it.

Guys at our camp dip apple and berry ( which I can't handle) ....but they both swear that they have had deer come in to check it out and licking it up. I have never noticed it being a problem, shot plenty of deer with kodiak spit all over my stand and the ground. Pretty sure that my stinky breath will overpower the dip smell, lol
I think it truly depends on your other levels of scent control. I have no doubt that they will smell it. Maybe even key to your location from it, but if they have no other scent to alert them, they will most likely dismiss it. I don't think you will see this with more mature deer. They will alert on most any "unnartural" scent.
