Default Mapping question...

Hey everyone, been awhile since I've been around here! Extremely busy second half of last semester and then I was in Greece for awhile. But anyway, I'm back to the hunting mindset and have a couple questions for ya'll.

Numero uno: Does anyone know of a program online (free preferably) that one can overlay topo maps on top of aerial photos? I know it's a long shot, but I thought I would ask.

Numero dos: I found a access point on some public that allows entry to an area I otherwise would never have been able to get to. I'm gonna search for some maps to take an overall look at it, so, what specifically (don't just tell me a pinch point or funnel) do you personally look for on an aerial or topo, of a property you have never hunted? I know this will be a bit different for each person, given hunting styles and areas in the country, but that's why I'm asking it this way. I located this alternate entrance during gun season and it looks like a small pocket of public surrounded by private land. It was getting late by that time so we decided not to hunt it, but I'm thinking about giving it a go for bow this fall.

So thanks to anyone who can lend some thoughts and also thanks to those who helped out with my survey for my Biz. Stats class.

Ya, I got uber busy there at the end. Projects, papers, sports, work. You know how it goes . That's ok. It was all better when I was in Greece . The project went real well, found a couple interesting things, but nothing earth shattering. I have the next couple weeks off still before spring semester starts, so I'll be around the compy a bit more, and on here a bit I suspect. When does your semester start? Anyway, good to be back. Got any advice on the maps or leads on question one? PS: how do you get your name changed on here? I no longer wear #99 for hockey (havent for a couple years actually) and I wanna change the name up.

Well mytopo does that and the maps are very nice, there not free though. You can even get them in color.
I look at the over all area, farms, fields, roads. Find lands that connect by streams, ditchs, fence rows, ridges. Those dancing deer signs the state puts up to warn motorist are a welcome sign to me (not on the map though but something to look for from the map).

I also look at the deer/car accident reports. They tell a story and can be found in news papers. Have2 new area's to hunt that when I saw where they were a light went off instantly, lot of deer get hit in that area.

Scouted 5other places yesterday that I'd only seen on maps(I'd studied the topo's of eachalong with the state & county maps quit a bit before going).2 were not anything, 1 was down right scary, 3 dead deer right at the git go with the most recent looking like it had been shot with a high powered rifle, started getting the creeps walking around there. One had deer feeding in it (one of those dancing deer signs greeted me just before I got there). Then there was one that was/is the silver tuna.[8D]

Fresh snow on the ground is another tool. Knew right where they walked.

I was able to find a program that can overlay topos on aerial. Oddly enough, I found it on the DNR website. WI boys will understand why I'm surprised. Looking at this chunk of land, I was at first surprised how large the parcel was, I thought it was a small chunk, but it's actually quite large. I was also surprised at the lack of anything drawing my attention. I seriously hope these maps and photos are just misleading, cuz this would be huge for me to be able to hunt.
