RE: Do we REALLY view Poaching as a "crime"?
Again it comes to someones definition of poaching IMO ...... too many variables ... that being said ....

Poaching is a violation of game laws and therefore is a crime. You can get a ticket from the game warden can't you? He can take your bow, gun, stand, and truck can't he? He can take you to jail. They are law enforcement officers and if you break a law, such as poaching, they will arrest you and the judge will decide what your punishment is.

Can someone give us a definition that we can all agree with? I'm not opposed to that.
Tony....I've only been deer hunting for a short time. I'm somewhat amazed at how we (as a hunting community.....and specifically as a deer hunting community) so easily seem to dismiss offenses involving game laws.

This thread is able to be answered anonymously.
Jeff .... a guy tags his buck with his wife's tag (she doesn't even hunt), or it's the last day of the season and 2 guys are hunting, one with a doe tag, the other with a buck tag .... the guy with the buck tag tells the guy with the doe tag, "shoot whatever you see and I'll tag it if it's a buck."2 examples of what some would call poaching.
thoughts?

IMHO, the meaning of the word "poaching" has been corrupted to the point where it encompasses any game violation and hence when someone says a "poacher" was caught you have no idea what specific law he violated. Now if we go by the dictionary definition which is basically tresspassing for the purpose of taking fish and/or game then I say it's a pretty serious offense and pending the specifics could be criminal. If the offense is some triviality like not properly displaying your back tag then no, just a simple violation.
Yes!It's acrime because it is illegal. Butit's also due to the reason thatsome of the time it involves being unsafe or putting others at risk or danger, just like driving drunk. (Ex: Road Hunters)
