Taz and Der Jagd Meister,
I'd sure like to know what you are basing your high opinion of Fred Bear on? He regularly took long, 80, 90, even 100+ yard shots on RUNNING game.
He drank while hunting and was known to find his game from planes, land, and set up an ambush.
Now I know I am really stirring the hornests nest here but if you read Fred's book, I think it is called "Fred Bears Field Notes", and his buddy Bob Mungers book, "Trailing a Bear" I think you might change your mind.
He did a lot to promote bowhunting...and line his own pockets. Personally, I would not hunt with him. BEFORE you flame me READ THE BOOKS. If you have not read his own accounts, and the accounts of Bob Munger, you are not completely informed about the actions of Mr Bear. If you read the books, and still think he was the greatest, one of us is really missing something.
Ok, now you can let me have it for hero bashing.

Hey Tazman,
A little off topic here, but I see you are a proud parent of a Devil Dog. Congratulations.
I am also. Doesn't it make you proud?
He's a Corporal, currently deployed as a Combat Engineer in a assault battalion attached to the 3rd Marines in Okinawa. We miss him a lot, but am really proud of what he is doing.
May God be with your Marine and your family.

Steve F,
I'm sure what you read about Fred was true, and I agree that by today's standards it does not measure up. The only thing I can say is things sure were different back then, and not only bowhunting.
Things that used to pass as socially acceptable would land you in a heap of legal or moral trouble today. So before passing judgement consider the context of the times and societies views.

Thanks Greg, I will concur that some of Freds exploits were not totally within todays standards, but as you say, Fred lived in a different era with a different set of standards. I am by no stretch of the imagination downgrading Chuck Adams, but I doubt if he was given the same equipment he could match Fred Bears acheievements and as far as filling his pockets with money, you bet he did and so has Adams and a lot of other lesser hunters out there.
One question for you Steve, without Fred Bear do you feel that bow hunting would be where it is today?

Taz,
Without minimizing Fred Bears contributions to the popularity of bowhunting, I do believe that someone else would have come along to poularize it.
After all, Pope and Young were there for Fred Bear to emulate. If he had not done so I am sure Jim Dougherty or Bob Lee or one of the other early bow hunters would have.
I have been to the Fred Bear Archery Museum twice and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I have to say though, that when I tell my kids to look up to someone as a role model in our sport it would not be Fred Bear.

For me , it wouldn't be Chuck Adams either!
I cant say if it's 100% true or not , but I remember reading somewhere that Chuck Adams made a statement regarding his North American grand slam and how you have to be willing to sacrifice your family in order to accomplish it. I love bowhunting , but I'll keep my priorities straight while doing it!
