With a lot of posts lately bashing gun hunters or someone who only hunts one week out of the year, I am wondering what is everyone's definition of a "true hunter" or a "real hunter"?
Why should the weapon matter or how much time you spend in the field? To me ethics, knowledge, and safety are something a true hunter has. And I know several people who only hunt a couple days of the yearand possess all of these and could probably out hunt a lot people on this site.
Sounds to me like you and I are on the same page. Weapons don't matter to me, but all the rest of the things you stated truly define a "true hunter". I agree, and its a shame, that some people do get caught up in a holier than thou attitude...
One that goes above and beyond; who gives more than he takes!

I don't know how much weapon has to do with it, but I guess the amount of success has to play a role at some point. All of those characteristics listed are qualities that good hunters portray, but does that make them good hunters or just good people that hunt? At some point I think we have to ask if a hunter has produced consistently, beit, big bucks, bucks, does, all three. I mean we wouldn't consider a quarter back a great quarter back if he had few touchdown passes or very little passing yards at the end of his carrer would we. (Ex. Bubby Brister.. sorry PA guys!!!)I don't know, maybe Im wrong, but if I am I will be set straight very quickly on here!!

to me the weapon of choice makes no difference... if you make clean kills and respect the land and animals you seek, i'm good with it... imho, its easier to define what is NOT a real hunter... guys that get drunk and go out in the woods, shoot from their trucks, kill animals "just because", etc...
