Default Hunting partners don't understand scent control and make ME STINK!

I spent the last week hunting with my dad and cousin. It was a great week and I cherish their company.

The only problem was that they both smoke, and have NO CONCEPT of scent control. I really don't care what they do, unless it affects me. A couple of times it did.

We'd ride in the truck together to our stands, and one or both would light up in the truck. So I now I'm in the awkward position of asking my OWN FATHER not to smoke in his own truck LOL!

Another time, I see my cousin standing in his Scentblocker suit right next to the tailpipe of his 79 Ford Truck. He's literally standing in a cloud of exhaust fumes in his hunting gear. I pushed him out of thefume cloudlike he was about to get hit by a bus! He looked at me like I was crazy.

Every night we'd have a campfire, and they'd sit around the fire in their hunting clothes. I think they only showered once the entire 5 days we hunted, and teeth brushing before the hunt was NOT a daily routine. The rationale was "I'm camping man! My wife is 3 hours away".

I was the exact opposite. I'm sticking to my extreme scent control regiment the best I can. I tried to educate these guys about scent control, but they just look at me like I'm lecturing them. I didn't want to sound like an A-hole, so I eventually just let it go. The only time I had an issue was when their "stink" got on me. It was frustrating at times.

I understand, a friend of mine caught me in the exhaust fumes and he spoke up. I thank him to today. I should have known better. Detach yourself from them and shoot bigger deer and they will wonder why!

So....Who got a deer? If they did and you didn't, I am having a smoke infront of my tailpipe next time I'm out...Ha!

I too try to stay scent free as much a possible. Have had deer walk right by me this year and didn't even know I was there!

Good luck!

Roll with it.

My dad is 80 now and it's hard to get him out of the house before 7am and he wants to be back in the truck before dark! The past few years, I haven't even bought a license (non-res for me), I carry a chair and his pack for him and wake him up if the deer are moving.

These are the best hunts, as it's always in the back of my mind that any one could be our last.

As for your situation, put your gear in a trash bag and get dressed when you get out of the truck. Don't worry about what Dad and cousin are doing. If you have success and it's important to them, they'll start paying attention

That's a tough spot bro. It's obvious you are much more serious about hunting deer than they, and that's ok, but like you said........In this case, it affects YOU as well. I'm thinking you used the right word, "awkward."

I camped out last week as well, now I don't own any Scent blocker stuff, showered 3 times last week, buddies did it less than that...We killed 18 deer....

If it's important to you to manage your scent, do so....But don't jepredize the time that you have with your dad, mine died when I was 20, back in 1975, I'd give anything to have one more hunt with him.....

Several years ago my brother actually picked up the Coleman stove and put it outside of our hunting cabin, because I was frying bacon for breakfast, he didn't want the scent on his clothes....I hunt to relax, dang if I'm going to make a job of it, years ago, maybe, not anymore....

Man, I feel your pain! I have a friend which I have hunted with for 15 years. I don't think there is anything he could do that would actually terminate our friendship, but at times it is like finger nails on the chaulk board.

I'm like qzq38b: I really practice scent control the best I can, doing everything possible to eliminate human scent. Well; first day this season, he dresses in the same pair of leather boots he works in, gasses up the truck, goes in Mc Donalds for morning coffee, then proceeds to walk under my stand to get to his! (He said it was closer than going in the other way)

I dont think smoke bothers them , sweat and gas on the other hand , will drive them inside out .
