I don't anymore. It's not legal here in VA, or was it legal in Ohio when I lived up there. I did carry a pistol for a time anyway. several years ago there was some crazy guy killing hunters and fisherman in PA and Ohio. During that time I carried everytime I went out legal or not!

FARM HUNTER,
Just for the record, I just checked the Iowa DNR website and found it's illegal here too. I don't use one becuse I lost my rights to carry a modern firearm many years ago. I just posted this to let you guys know what the law was in Iowa.
KEEP IT LEGAL. KEEP IT SAFE. OR WE MAY NOT GET TO KEEP IT AT ALL.

As far as dying for possession of a deer..... "Go ahead, he's yours. Nice shooting".
If I were worried about the 2 legged varmits I'd get a real gun.

Its illegal in Illinois to carry a firearm while bowhunting. Where I hunt I feel very safe and have no need for it anyway. I know who hunts the areas besides me.

Briandamage, think about it this way...
You and I are coming out of the woods, both of us are dragging P&Y deer. The thieves see that I am packing a Smith and all you have is an empty bow...
Who gets robbed?
FOOLPROOF?
Never underestimate the power of a fool!
What if the "Hokey Pokey" really is what it's all about?

easy...we both do. You get shot first, since you are clearly the biggest threat if I can tell that you are packing. No way you dragged the deer out in one hand and gun in the other. I'll get shot too, just to rub out the witness.
easy to be an armchair commando and pretend that stuff happens perfect like in the movies
I'm not against defending one's self. Hell, I carry my glock nearly everywhere I go. I have an Alabama CCW and a Florida non-resident CCW.
But like I said, in the middle of the woods, by yourself...somebody comes up to steal your deer - more than likely he's already got his gun out. Not worth my life trying to play hero. Let him take it. Try and get it back legal. Even if you shoot him, than you have to go through all the crap with the courts trying to prove whether or not it was justified.

Thanks for the replies, guys.
It's illegal for me too and to be honest...
I don't give a Rat's A**
One more question to everyone concerning packing a Handgun.
Would you rather be caught with it or WITHOUT it ?
Think about it thoroughly before giving your answer.

Sag, I agree. I'd rather be caught by the good guys with a gun, than by the bad guys without one. The problem is, in a confrontation a handgun is a poor choice when confronted by a shotgun. Should the situation ever arise and I was given the choice, I'd give up the deer. If I felt I was not going to survive the encounter, either way, I'd use deadly force. The main concern would be to get to escape cover quickly and draw your weapon, before getting shot. The use of deadly force carries with it huge responsibilities. But if it's going to me or them, I choose me.

It is illegal here in NY. I have done it however because I was
concerned someone might try to steal my deer. I gave up the
extra 3 pounds because I came to the realization that if they
stole my deer, I could beat them to the road and call the
authorities.
