Default Idaho's elk rut

In general when is the hot and heavey rut start for elk in Idaho? Is it around the second or third week of september or are they a little later. I am going to try and bow hunt them and need to have an idea of when to take time off to try and get on one. Thanks for all the help.

From what I have read....but not hunted myself. I think the end of the second wk should work the best. But you know all changes with the weather and moon.

I am FAR from an expert, but based on two week long hunts in Idaho, both the same week (second week of bow season), around 9/15 starting date. I'd go the 3rd week of bowseason. Both times the week before was slow (pre-rut) and the beginning of the week was slow. Kicked up noticably for the second half of the week.

Going again in 2007 for the third week.

Mac, I think your pretty close on your dates, but if you put this question up in the Big Game Forum, there some homeboys from Idaho that wrote the book on elk hunting and there always more than eager to share there experience. Good Luck.
