Rocket sidewinder test results
Rocket sidewinder with pathfinder point
Accuracy: 5 points
Plywood: 2 points
Orange: 3 points
Steel drum 1 point
Blades 3 points
Cutting diameter: 4 points
Total score 18(+) with a blade sharpness rating of C
The Rocket sidewinder is rockets midsize mechanical. It is a 3 blade swing open type broadhead with a 1 ½” cutting diameter. I found the accuracy of the sidewinder to be excellent, grouping and flying just like my field points. In the Orange test the head fully opened by the time it had exited the far side. In the plywood the head penetrated up to the back of the blades. The tip of one blade broke off. About half of the cutting surface remained. The other blades looked fine. In the steel drum the head penetrated the first side, but all three blades sheared off, and the ferule broke in half. I think this is a little better head than the score would indicate. The blades are a bit fragile( as I have found all the rocket heads to be) but still plenty strong for deer size animals. The blades are also duller than I think they should be, but again, a lot of people use them as they come out of the package with good results. The ferule did break in half on the steel drum test, but only after penetrating the first side. I don’t think you would encounter this kind of resistance in a deer. That is unless you hit the thick part of the shoulder, or possibly the rear thigh or leg bones. All and all I like the sidewinders, I feel they could be improved, but I would not have any problems using them on deer myself as they are. Once I sharpen the blades, that is. If you like rocket heads, and want more cutting diameter than the steel heads, but don’t want to go to a 2” head, this is the one you will want to look at.
