I have been wanting to get into bowfishing because the Wabash river by my house is full of gar and carp. Just wandering, what do you guys do with all the fish that you shoot. Please dont tell me you eat them because Ive watched carp suck down some unidentable substances that sure didnt look edible, I always wondered how they grew so big off foam and scum. I would probably use some of them for bait durring trapping season. So, what do you do with your pile of S^*% eating fish?

Around here not many gar
Not many gar? I guess you don't bowfish that much in Ohio. I bowfish here and find them in several lakes and rivers very often. I guess we need to hook up and show you the ropes...lol Also I know some that eat the carp, but I'm not going to with all the trash in our waterways, not to manytrash fishyou can really eat now.

It's funny how there can be concentrations of certain species in one spot, and then different fish just a few hundred yards away. In the rivers, the fish locations seem to vary greatly depending on the bottom structure, vegetation, and flow. I know one spot on a river near me where I can routinely see buffs and occasionally gar in one spot, but only carp and buffs in another. On the opposite bank, I'll find only carp.

Carp do not eat scum from the surface, they are much like trout and bonefish. they cruise the bottom, mainly in muddy water and suck up both mud and aquatic invertebrates (snails, crayfish, caddis, and mayfly larvae) they then spit out the mud and eat the animal. that scum you sasw them eat was probably an emerger, where larval insects emerge from the water as adults, either that or zooplankton rich algae. as for eating fish, i've tried many ways and still haven't found a good way to eat them. Gar on the other hand are actually good eating (i know no one believes me until they have one too many beers and try it) take a gar remove the head tail and fins. Gut the fish. cut the fish into steaks. boil 2 pots of water one seasoned, one not. place the gar steaks into the non seasoned water. they will boil for a couple of minutes then look a lot like cauliflower. remove the fish and the skin should peel off. the water will be very dirty and muddy, next place the fish in the seasoned water and let it boil for a few minutes. remove and dip in butter to eat, i am not kidding it tastes pretty good.
all i know is gar makes some good catfish bait when i go fishing in the medina river that stuff works like magic and as for the carp my granma makes it similiar to a catfish and cooks it in foil with some of her magic spices then puts some lemon and bamm ..lol..but im not even kiddin that was some awesome stuff, but im not to sure about the gar[:'(]

Thanks for the info. I knew that carp ate crustaceans and invertabrates of the bottom but had know Idea about the scum I seen the buffalo eating, makes since. I have ate carp before, my grandpa use to scale them and fry them in a pan, a big pan. It was pretty tastey from what I can remember but my favorite part was the crunchy fins. He would also fry up the egg masses and they were not to bad neither.
