Default First Fish

Well I finally got my first fish. Shot after shot I began to get frustrated after pulling up a few scales but no fish. Then I connected. I ended up with five carp on the day and I finished 3 for 3. It was an amazing feeling. But one thing I haven't figured out is i hit a grass carp square in the back, fought him on the reel then the arrow came out. I drilled him from 3 feet away, but oh well i guess i still had a blast.

Hey Deer dont be too disappointed carp are real soft bodied and if you shoot them squarely sometimes they still pull off. And even if you shoot through them the string can cut its way out of the fish during the fight just keep firing away......and congrats on your first fish.......

Congrats!

Bowfishing is like that. Even after you get the hang of the "aim low" concept, you'll still have days that, for whatever reason, youcan't hit anything. Then there will be others when you can't seem to miss.

If the fish isn't pulling off because he's too squishy and tearing apart, or breaking the line, it may be because of a lack of penetration. Sometimes the arrows just don't go deep enough to fully engage the barbs. I usually see this when it's a heador spine shot, or if they were way out there.

Can't get 'em all, but it's fun trying.

Try to see if your arrow is hitting straight or planing off when it enters the water. That can cause a sideways hit with little penetration. And common carp can seem armor plated sometimes. I don't have much problem with grass or asian carp, but in Branson it seems I pell up numerous scales that the arrow penetrated up to the barb then stopped.

Also, what type of tip are you using? 4-barbs are not too popular because you have to remove them completely from the arrow to remove the fish, but have excellent holding power. The Muzzy tips are very easy to remove fish, but don't have as much holdinig power. If you use the Muzzys, squeeze the prongs together with a pair of pliers. They should point more nearly straight back, but still rotate. This will create a smaller-diameter entry hole, which will make it harder for the arrow to pull out, but the prongs will still catch and hold.
