Back when Rick Bibby (RIP) had Pacnor make the first 40s for the Savage MLII he went with the 408 Cheytac in 1-16. That was the slowest twist Pacnor offered. He intended to shoot the 200gr SST and 195gr Barnes though. Not the 300gr bigguns we see today in the 40cal builds.

If we look at 405Win factory barrels nearly all of them are 1-13 or 1-14 and a 300gr at nearly 2200fps is the most common load. BH209 can match that velocity in a custom 40.

The big problem with either of these is most molds are for .406-.411 and 1-14 is pretty fast for soft lead. Even soft lead over 1.3in long. There are old 40cals like the 40-65 but thats only a 260gr-280gr bullet usually. I really would not want to go lower than say....350gr which is really close to a 40-90 Sharps (370gr)

As you can see building a 40 to be more bullet specific is far easier than a dual purpose build and a .408x.416 barrel has a few more bullet options although most are in the 400gr range. Down sizing just a couple thousandths is probably also a little less problematic than going from .411 down to .401
