Mold Question
Greetings all. I am thinking about casting my own round balls for my .72 caliber smoothbore. ToW has a scissor type of mold that I am considering

Has anyone used this type of mold? I have never cast bullets/balls before, is the scissor type of mold more difficult for newbies to use than say the style with wooden handles?
I am not interested in casting center fire bullets I just want to lower the cost per shot of the .72 cal.
Thank you for your thoughts.

This one is similar to the one I used for a few years when I shot Ball.

Mine was a Lyman but it didn't look as well made as this one. More expensive and you will still need a good set of tongs and either a spruce trimmer or a file (I always used a file to make a perfect cleanup) but you will find that these will produce a better, cleaner ball. I quite making my own but I might just get back into casting some coni's. May have a machinist buddy cut the design I like into a good leaded steel mold set. Damn I have too much time on my hands nowadays!

Robert, there's a guy in the UK - Jeff Tanner - who makes round ball molds of any diameter you want. They run around $40 (depending upon current U.S. dollar to British pound rate). All I've ever seen are very good things about his molds; good quality/quick service/easy ordering/easy pay process. I've provided a link below, but you can GOOGLE Jeff Tanner Molds and see posts on other forums about his molds.

And, the best tool I've ever used for cutting the sprue is the $12 toenail clipper from Walgreens.

Thank you all for your thoughts.
Semi I had a look at the Jeff Tanner site: those are some impressive looking molds. Thanks for the toe nail clipper idea - it looks like the clipper I have in my medicine cabinet!

Robert, here's a calculator for converting the current rate of GBP (British Pound Sterling) to the U.S. dollar.
