What is or was the reason for this style of stock on the old type of muzzleloader?

It was made for off hand shooting and you put the stock between your bicep and shoulder...

It hooks under your arm to help hold up the heavy barrel.

Seriously, if you're going to take the name mountain man. You should learn more about them.

There's a perfect example on why I used the word 'cocky' the other day.
Also, it states 'mounting'

Ok, my bad. I never would have guessed the real meaning of your name. I just thought you couldn't spell.

I'm into the mountain man era, and I figured if anybody took that name they at least should know something about them.

Anyway, try mounting the gun the way I explained. It really is comfortable once you get it right.

If you can't deal with it you can put a wood filler in it to make it straight, and cover it with a leather sleeve. That way it will still have the right look.

Also, to eliminate any confusion, it's not a half-moon . It is a crescent butt plate . a crescent moon shape and a half moon shape are very different. Just look in the sky and you will see what I mean.
