I want to cut my own patches for my .32 Cherokee but I was trying a hollow punch set on a piece of wood and it would not cut the ticking material. My question is do I need a wad cutter like from Dixie or do I just need a hardwood piece of scrap or like a piece of aluminum to put under the cutter? It just didn't penetrate the material like I thought it would. Perfect circle on the ticking but not cut through just embedded in the pine board.

JL, round patches may satisfy your sense of symmetry but they add nothing to accuracy or effectiveness. Many side-by-side tests have proved that round patches and square patches shoot the same. Just cut those suckers square with scissors and be done with it.

Works for me then. I have plenty of ticking and a good pair of scissors. Headed to camp later today to sight it in. Will let you know how that went. Had cut them square, 3/4 inch and seems to be perfect size. Lubed with vegetable oil!

If you want to cut round patches try getting a set of plug cutters from the hardware store and get a block of hard wood fire wood will do before it is split or a stump cut on the end of the grain not the side. It works quite well for me.I normally use 6 folds and cut 6 at a time if you fold your cloth so you can cut down a row it goes much faster.
