Default Built my shooting bench.

Although I got some good ideas from the post on homemade shooting benches, I decided to slap one together with the materials I had laying around the garage. It seems to be nice and sturdy. I am going to add a couple of levels, one on front and one on the side. Had to make it so you could shoot from either side because my wife shoots her 270 left handed. Going to use with folding chair or fold up hunting stool, whichever fits best for height. It is light and will easily fit in back of pickup. Took only a little over an hour to build. Now I just need to paint it.

Nice looking bench, did you actually try setting up a rifle and sitting in a shooting position?

Looks good to me. Being a left-handed shooter myself, I can appreciate the accommodations for us southpaws!!! Nice work!

Halfbaked... I thought about adjusting feet but I mainly built it to take up to a mountain clearing. I think if I take along a small shovel I should be able to clear a little soil to level it. I want the bigger footprint of the 2x4 for stability and so it doesn't sink in. If it doesn't work then I will look at adjustment options.

Builder...A folding chair works just about perfect. I have to scoot down slightly since I am tall, 6'4", but I wanted it to be short enough so others in the family can use it.

My stepson turned 12 last year and my son also turns 12 this year which is the minimum age you have to be to buy big game licenses in Montana. The bench will allow us to go up somewhere shooting and get some good father-son-stepson time without having to drive to a rifle range. My son doesn't have a lot of shooting experience with larger caliber rifles yet, just gopher hunting with .22. I only have him 2 days a week since he lives with my ex most of the time. Plus I am going to get them shooting muzzleloaders and see how well they like it.

I started my boys with a .177 airgun, then the .22, then the .50 cal flintlock but I loaded it down to 50 gr 2f goex to start. Just enough to give them a thump with the big bang. We then progressed up through the powder volume to full loads 80-100 gr. After that I stuck a .270 in their hands and they had no issues at all. One of them wanted to try my 45-70 with my handloads.... I told them to hang on tight. lol
