Question The "new" GPR

Since I have been putting the first ever rounds through this 1979 model, the thought of separating barrel from breech entered my mind.

My thinking is to apply anti-seize to the threads ;however, is there really any reason to/not to do this?

Is there a dedicated wrench or set of wrenches available?

This GPR is a Lyman Great Plains Rifle.. correct? If that is the case the breech end does not come off. They are not meant to come off. And if you try you will probably mess up the hooked breech. If your desire to remove the "breech" is for reasons of cleaning.. well forget it. Give the rifle a water bath and it will be fine.

Never be worried about posting. I'd rather you ask a question and get answers then to just go ahead and do something that could hurt your rifle or yourself.

Huntaway-I always have the best intentions w/ photos, but little follow through. The rifle is grouping well at 80 yds; I'madjusting to the sight picture of the GPR.

Cayugad-that was a take on a line from a vintage motorcycle forum -"Ride more, post less." Best thing about this place is the accumulated knowledge/experience & the willingness to share.

I had a old side hammer, one of the first I ever hunted with. Anyway I got a cleaning jag stuck in it, it came off when the patch I used was too big and I could'nt get it to come back out. I pulled so hard it came off the Jag.
I neede this MLer Bad, I had to hunt the next day and this was my only MLer I had to use, I tried everything, even shooting it out with some powder poured in the flash channel.....it would'nt come out. I tried a patch puller and almost had it but that broke off the rod....damn!
Down to the garage and to the Vice I went.....with a pipe wrench I broke apart the breech and it unscrewed. I know it was'nt ment to ever come apart but it did and I was a desperate man so it called for desperate measures.
I got the Jag out, and gave that baby the best cleaning it ever had. Put it all back togeather and it worked fine. To this day I still dont know why they never made them with a removeable breech.
How many of our's today have a crud ring at the bottom of the breech that will never be clean no matter how clean we think they are, and are rusting away at the bottom, what a shame.
The MLer was My 50cal Dixie Gun Works Poor Boy, the year 1992
