Default Well its settled

Took both the .54 1:70 and the .50 1:28 out this morning. And it was surely a toss up as to which rilfe to take for bear. Both rifles shot very, very good with their respective loads. I settled on the .50 only because the easier loading aspect with the saboted bullet vs the PRB. This may be a plus should I need a follow up shot.
But on another point. Prior to heading out, I swapped the stocks on the barrels because I wanted the .54 on the custom stock that the .50 was on. And the .50 was previously sighted in with the tang peep. When I shot the first ball thru the .54 at the 50 yd target, I was a bit surprised to see the POI was right in the 2" black dot. Another shot was touching the first. This is a tribute to Green Mountain's consistancy in their production. To be able to swap barrels and NOT have to adjust a tang mounted peep sight! WOW was is pretty cool.

PRB hard to load?

Sabots easy to load on 2nd shot?

Isn't this backwards?

Muley, No, the PRB not hard to load at all. But I use patch strips and cut at the muzzle in lieu of precut patches. Also, I need my short starter for the PRB to get them started down the bore.
With the saboted bullets, I can start them down with my thumb and then push them down with the ramrod.
I loaded second shots with both and there is no substantial difference between first and second shots.
Now the edge in accuracy goes to the PRB at the 50 yd mark. But the difference is so slight that it's not even a consideration in the decision.

I'm not that experienced with sabots. I've read so many times that I believed it's true that they load hard. Especially, on the 2nd shot. I guess not if they load easy for you.

I guess I like the PB, because I don't need a short starter either. One less thing to drag around, and being screwed if I lose it. I like to keep it simple.
